GREGG COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY

NEWSLETTER

June 21, 2017

—EVENTS COMING UP

July 4th — The party will have a booth at the Longview Exhibition Building on the fourth of July. We need volunteers to help set up, man the booth to sign up interested parties, and deputy voter registrars to be available to register first time voters. If you are interested in helping out, contact either Chairman Jim Cogar or events chairman Allen McReynolds with the time you are available or if you wish to register voters. Both individuals can be contacted using the contact us link at greggcountydemocrats.com.

July 14th – The NAACP Scholarship Gala will be held on this date and as is usual, the Gregg County Democrats will be present. We have reserved a table but individual tickets are still available by contacting Longview NAACP.  The price is $50 per person. This is always an exciting and fun night and supports a very worthy cause. Hope to see many of you there.

August – As some of you may be aware, the application by the Gregg County Elections Administer and the Gregg County Commissioner’s Court to hold county wide voting on Election Day has been approved. This means that election workers and judges will need to be trained in the new procedures. If you are an election worker or Judge, and wish to be so again, please notify the County Chair at jlcogar3@aol.com of your willingness to be appointed. If you have never been a worker, and wish to take part in this fundamental block of American Democracy, contact the above email address and express your desire to serve. The primary season will be here soon and we will need all the workers and judges we can get.

September – The party participates in the Keep Longview Beautiful program. We have adopted a two mile stretch of MLK Blvd from Estes Parkway north. Precinct Chair Ross Harrison coordinates the quarterly cleanup and is always looking for help. The next scheduled cleanup is set for September. The exact date will be announced soon. If you wish to be a part of this worthy effort, contact Ross using the contact us link on our website.

–ANNOUNCEMENTS AND KUDOS

Islamic Center Open House.  I was glad to see so many progressives at this event. It was extremely informative and fun for all who attended. I am confident that it did much to make many aware that our Muslim neighbors are as American and Texan as we are.

REMEMBER!! The county Executive Committee meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month, 6 pm, at the Downtown Meeting Place, on East Cotton Street. There is additional parking beyond the usual parking spaces next to be building. This is an open meeting and all are invited to attend. Our next meeting will be on July 11, 2017. Hope to see many of you there.

VOLUNTEERS.  We are always looking for volunteers to serve on committees. Not only do we have an events committee, but a search committee to find new precinct chairs, and a fund raising committee to help us raise money to keep us relevant and part of our county and state. In addition we will be seeking volunteers to help prepare for the County Convention next Spring. People to man tables at the sign in, serve on various procedural committees, and food preparation are just of few of the tasks we need to fill as well as decorating and take down help.

It is important that volunteers remember that just because there isn’t a committee that interests you, doesn’t mean what interests you cannot be of interest us. New thoughts, ideas, and suggestions are always welcome. Please feel free to let us know what you feel we need to do to continue our mission. We are only as good as the people who take part in our party.

If anyone has the expertise to convert this newsletter to print form complete with photos and graphics, contact Allen McReynolds and let’s make it happen.

DONATIONS. If you can’t or don’t want to participate in any specific area, please remember that it takes over $150 a month to maintain a viable Democratic presence in the County. Any contribution you can make is welcome. You can set up a monthly donation through your bank, or send a check to us at PO Box 1011, Longview TX 75606.

PROGRESSIVE GROUPS. While the Gregg County Democratic Party is the official link to the Texas and National Democratic Parties, other progressive organizations are present in our county. Democratic Women of East Texas, Stonewall Democrats, Organizing for Action, Turn East Texas Blue, and Indivisible Longview are here and working hard to advance many progressive causes. If you are interested in working with one of these fine groups, we can put you in contact with them. Again, use the contact us link at greggcountydemocrats.com.

SPREAD THE WORD!! If you know of someone who may want to be a part of our efforts but are not aware of how and what we do, please forward this newsletter to them so we can add them to our mailing list.

YOUNG DEMOCRATS.  Josh Gibson will be attending the Young Democrats convention in August. If you know of some young people who want to be a part of our efforts, I’m sure he can help them organize a Young Democrats Club. Again, contact us and we will lend a hand.

SHIRTS –The first order for our new polo style shirts has been placed. These are golf style shirts with Democratic Party of Gregg County surrounding a map of the county. Shirts cost $20 and a second order is being taken. Email me (jlcogar3@aol.com) if you wish to order. Please mention size and number to be added to the list.
